The Working Principle of Lithium - Batteries

Latest company news about The Working Principle of Lithium - Batteries

Lithium-batteries have become an integral part of our modern lives, powering everything from smartphones to electric vehicles. But how do they actually work?

At the heart of a lithium-battery is the movement of lithium ions.In a typical lithium-ion battery, during charging, lithium ions are extracted from the positive electrode(cathode),pass through an electrolyte, and are inserted into the negative electrode(anode). This process is accompanied by the flow of electrons through an external circuit, creating an electrical current. The most common cathode materials include lithium-cobalt-oxide,lithium-iron-phosphate,and lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide.Each material has its own characteristics in terms of energy density, power output, and cost.

When the battery is discharging, the process is reversed.Lithium ions move back from the anode to the cathode, and electrons flow back through the external circuit to power the device. This reversible ion-transfer mechanism allows lithium-batteries to be recharged multiple times.

However, over time, the performance of lithium-batteries degrades.Side reactions can occur at the electrodes, leading to the formation of a solid-electrolyte-interface(SEI)layer.This layer can grow and impede the movement of lithium ions, reducing the battery's capacity and overall performance.Understanding these fundamental working principles is crucial for further improving the performance and lifespan of lithium-batteries.
